Day 01 :

Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Depart Arusha and drive to the Machame Gate to begin your Kilimanjaro adventure. Trek gently upwards through beautiful montane forest filled with ferns, begonias and other vegetation before reaching camp among the giant heather at approximately 3,000 metres.

Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours.
Ascent: Approximately 1,200 metres.

Day 02 :

Machame Camp – Shira Cave

Leave the heather zone behind and trek into open moorland towards Shira Cave at approximately 3,840 metres. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing fascinating geological formations within Kilimanjaro’s ancient volcanic terrain. An optional short afternoon walk may be possible.

Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours.
Ascent: Approximately 840 metres.

Day 03 :

Shira – Barranco Valley

Continue towards Kibo across the rugged high-altitude desert, enjoying views of Kilimanjaro’s western glaciers. Trek beneath the imposing Western Breach before descending into the sheltered Barranco Valley at approximately 3,950 metres. Although the net elevation gain is modest, climbing high and sleeping lower helps with acclimatization.

Day 04 :

Barranco – Karanga Valley – Barafu

Begin with the exciting ascent of the Barranco Wall, including sections of straightforward scrambling. Descend towards Karanga Valley for a break before continuing upwards to Barafu at approximately 4,600 metres. Enjoy impressive views towards Mawenzi and rest early in preparation for summit night.

Walking time: Approximately 7–8 hours.
Ascent: Approximately 650 metres.

Day 05 :

Barafu – Summit – Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt at around 1:00 a.m., climbing steep frozen scree towards the crater rim. Pass the high points around Stella Point and continue towards the summit of Kilimanjaro as daylight breaks across the mountain. After celebrating your achievement, descend via the Mweka Route to camp at approximately 3,400 metres.

Summit ascent: Approximately 7 hours.
Descent: Approximately 6–7 hours.

Day 06 :

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

Complete your final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. Successful climbers collect their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle for the journey back to Arusha.

Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours.
